What is GEO? A plain guide to generative engine optimization

If you sell software or a high-ticket service, you have probably noticed something odd. Your Google rankings look fine, but when you ask ChatGPT for the best tools in your category, your company is missing.

That gap is what people now call GEO, or generative engine optimization. The name is new. The idea is simple: make it easy for a language model to say true, useful things about your brand when it writes an answer from what it already learned.

GEO is not the same as classic SEO

SEO is mostly about ranking pages on Google and earning clicks. GEO is about being named correctly inside an AI answer, even when there is no blue link to click.

Both matter. You do not have to pick one. You do have to accept that models use different signals than a search crawler score.

What actually helps GEO

  • One clear story about who you are. Same company name, same category, same one-line pitch on your homepage, About page, and LinkedIn.
  • Facts worth repeating. Pricing bands, regions you serve, who the product is for, numbers you can stand behind (customers, uptime, years in market).
  • Pages that answer real buyer questions. Comparisons, FAQs, and “how we are different” copy written for humans, not keyword stuffing.
  • Proof outside your site. Reddit threads, YouTube reviews, and press that mention you the same way you mention yourself.

A quick test you can run today

Open two or three tools you care about (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity). Ask: “What are the best [your category] tools for [your buyer]?” Write down who appears and what the model says about each name.

If you are not listed, or the description is wrong, that is your GEO to-do list.

Where Zomdel fits in

We start with that prompt test, then fix entity copy, missing facts, and forum gaps. GEO works best when it sits alongside AEO (cited links) and honest UGC on Reddit, YouTube, and Quora.
